At the recent annual meeting of the fish safety council, fish safety and water quality, members of the public were given an opportunity to discuss their fish and fish culture recommendations.
On June 2, 2015, the council voted to allow the use of a commercial fish-killing product, known as Tetracycline, as a potential alternative to the commercial fish-killing product that was already in the market for this purpose.
The fish-killing product was approved by the Council in the form of a single-use tank (SUDP) and has been in use for at least three months in the UK since it was approved.
It has not been approved by the government, but the Council has issued a warning to the public and it has issued a special report and guidance to the public.
This report was authored by an independent committee which concluded that there was a need to provide more information about the commercial use of Tetracycline for the treatment of bacterial infections such as bacterial prostatitis, bacterial pneumonia, bacterial sinusitis and bacterial infections of the urethra and other important infectious conditions.
The report also discussed the use of this new product in the treatment of fish poisoning.
“The use of Tetracycline for treatment of bacterial infections such as bacterial prostatitis and bacterial pneumonia has been associated with serious adverse events including mortality, necrotising fasciitis and otitis media in fish poisoning. It has also been recommended that this product be removed from the market for use in fish poisoning and for the treatment of bacterial infections in fish,” said the committee.
“The committee concluded that the use of Tetracycline for the treatment of bacterial infections in fish poisoning is a necessary and recommended safety measure. It has therefore recommended that the UK Government provide more information on the use of Tetracycline in fish poisoning.”
The report also highlighted that the use of the commercial Tetracycline product in fish poisoning should not be recommended for use in animals other than those for whom it is approved.
“The use of commercial Tetracycline for the treatment of bacterial infections in fish poisoning is a safe and effective treatment option for fish poisoning,” added the committee.
“It is also recommended that Tetracycline should not be used in the treatment of fish poisoning, as the safety and effectiveness of this treatment are not fully established in the UK. The safety of the commercial product, when used as a treatment for bacterial infections, should be confirmed in animals in the UK.”
The Council has set up a special monitoring group to monitor the use of commercial Tetracycline for the treatment of bacterial infections in fish poisoning.
“The council has developed a special monitoring group which can be convened to assess the potential risks and benefits associated with the use of commercial Tetracycline in fish poisoning,” said the committee.
“There is also a special monitoring group for the use of commercial Tetracycline in fish poisoning and a special monitoring committee to evaluate the potential risks and benefits of the commercial Tetracycline product for the treatment of bacterial infections in fish poisoning.”
